APRS Station

An APRS Station is a collection of equipment that participates in the APRS system. A station has the ability to handle digital packet traffic which conforms to the AX.25 Specification.

A station has a name or identifier which is a callsign followed by an SSID. The station's name needs to be unique in it's sphere of operation. Most folks use their Amateur Radio callsign as the character part of their APRS station name. For example: N0CZK-4

  • ~ RF Station Name
  • ~~ 3-6 capital alphanumeric characters (callsign)
  • ~~ SSID of 0 -15
  • ~ Internet Station Name
  • ~~ 3-9 total alphanumeric characters up to 1 hyphen followed by 1 or 2 alphanumeric characters

For RF station names, the SSID part should use this recommendation:

  • -1, -2, -3, -4 -- are for digipeaters and other home stations
  • -6 -- for Operations via Satellite
  • -7 -- for TH-D7 walkie talkies
  • -8 -- for boats, sailboats and ships (maybe 802.11 in the future)
  • -9 -- for Mobiles
  • -10 -- for operation via The internet only
  • -11 -- for APRStouch-tone users (and the occasional Balloons)
  • -14 -- for Truckers
  • -15 -- for HF
