Yaesu VX-8GR[edit]

A compact 5 watt 2m/70cm handheld with comprehensive APRS capability and a built in GPS. It is a slimmed down version (weight and features) of the VX-8R series. It still has many outstanding features of the series and added capabilities that the others lack, particularly on APRS.

KD4IZ User Comments[edit]

During first weeks of use, I discovered that not all digipeaters in my area seemed to hear the radio even though they were located near my position. I did an online search and found that my experience was not unique. Julian, G4ILO, author of VOAPROP software and an avid blogger has provided some good tips on how to remediate the situation. You can find his blog here:

Boosting the VX-8GR on APRS

You will need to be willing to grub around in the alignment menu and remember that you risk making your radio unusable if you are not careful when following these instructions. You will need to join the Yahoo VX-8R user group to access some critical instructions that Julian refers to.

Once the adjustment was complete, I found the radio performance to be quite acceptable.

Other good resources on this radio may be found through the Yahoo VX-8R User Group.
